Reflecting Biennale 2025 – Austrian Pavillon

The curators of the Austrian Pavilion Michael Obrist, Sabine Pollak and Lorenzo Romito in conversation with Lisz Hirn and Maik Novotny about "Reflecting the Biennale2025 – "Agency for Better Living" Agency for Better Living“ ist der Titel des österreichischen Beitrags zur 19. Internationalen Architekturausstellung – La Biennale di Venezia 2025. Das Projekt versteht sich zugleich als Ausstellung und Agency und widmet sich der globalen Wohnkrise sowie der Frage, wie bessere und leistbarere Lebensräume geschaffen werden können. Es stellt das top-down-Modell des sozialen Wohnbaus in Wien den bottom-up-Ansätzen selbstorganisierten Wohnens in Rom gegenüber und lädt im Rahmen von Assemblies Expert:innen und Besucher:innen dazu ein, sich aktiv an der gemeinsamen Entwicklung von Lösungsansätzen zu beteiligen. Die Kurator:innen des österreichischen Pavillons – Michael Obrist, Sabine Pollak und Lorenzo Romito – präsentieren das Projekt, gefolgt von einem Gespräch mit der Philosophin Lisz Hirn sowie dem Architekturjournalisten und Verleger Maik Novotny. „Die imaginäre Begegnung zwischen Wien und Rom im Österreichischen Pavillon eröffnet einen Möglichkeitsraum, der mehr ist als ein Kompromiss: Er könnte das Fundament für eine neue europäische Stadtentwicklungspolitik bilden, die Gemeinschaffen, Migration und soziale Gerechtigkeit als zentrale Elemente der Stadtgestaltung versteht. Conceived as both an exhibition and an agency project, it addresses the global housing crisis and explores how better and more affordable living environments can be created. The project contrasts Vienna’s top-down model of social housing with Rome’s bottom-up, self-organized approaches to living, and—through a series of assemblies—invites experts and visitors alike to take part in the collective development of solutions. The presentation of the pavilion by the Curators of the Austrian Pavilion – Michael Obrist, Sabine Pollak, and Lorenzo Romito – will be followed by a conversation with philosopher Lisz Hirn and architecture journalist and publisher Maik Novotny. „The imagined encounter between Vienna and Rome in the Austrian Pavilion reveals a range of possibilities that could lay the groundwork for a new European urban development policy—one that places commoning, migration, and social justice at the heart of urban design.
