Registration for Courses and Design Studios

Bachelor Students

It is recommended to arrive to Vienna at least 2 weeks before the start of the semester to have enough time to enrol at TU Wien, organize your courses and register for them. Access to the “Application Pool” is only possible after you enrol at TU Wien, so after your arrival in Vienna!

Please attend the Welcome Event! If you arrive a few days before semester start or on the first day, the online registration period is over. Welcome Event is your chance to gain information about remaining spots in any design studio (“Restplätze”) = BUT you have to be flexible about your course selection.

Please organize yourself early!

Preparation Tips

•          Select your favorite courses before arriving in Vienna.

•          For course-related questions, contact the responsible lecturer.

•          If you need help with course selection, contact your academic adviser (see your acceptance letter).

•          For technical or administrative questions regarding registration, contact the Jira Serviceportal (link below).

Application pools open at mid of September (for the winter semester) and mid of February (for the summer semester) and can be accessed via your TISS account. Deadlines and other important dates are always posted on the homepage of Faculty for Architecture and Planning in advance. So please check and stay updated!

A few days before the pools open you will receive an email from the Dean’s Office with links to the designated application pools and further important information

  • The same links are also available on the Faculty of Architecture and Planning homepage.
  • On the homepage, you will find short video presentations of the courses to help you choose: https://colab.tuwien.ac.at/display/PA/Poolbewerbung+Architektur
  • Have a look at the Course Catalogue: http://tiss.tuwien.ac.at (“Education”) to gain an overview about the offered courses.

Application pools are required for the following courses:

A)    Bachelor Entwerfen = Bachelor Design Studios, with 15 ECTS

B)    Wahlseminar = Elective Seminar, written seminar work, 5 ECTS

We recommend attending design projects for max. 15-20 ECTS / semester - the workload is very high!

IMPORTANT: in the Application Pool you can choose 3 studios according to your preference – you will be placed in one of them. If you need to attend more than one design studio, please contact the Jira Serviceportal.

Make sure to choose courses according to your enrolment (Bachelor or Master)!

!! There are other types of courses that are not part of the application pools (see Academic Programmes in TISS) that you can register regardless of your academic programme such as transferable skills or excursions. Please look them up in the course catalogue in TISS: https://tiss.tuwien.ac.at/curriculum/studyCodes.xhtml?dswid=5875&dsrid=16

How to register for lectures and courses in TISS

Usually, you register for each course separately (see application period in TISS course description). For “Vorlesung/Lecture (VO)” NO registration is needed - only for the exam at the end! To have an overview of your course registrations, make sure to add them to your „favorites“in TISS.

If you do not have your student number yet

Please make sure to contact the Jira Serviceportal immediately (https://jira.it.tuwien.ac.at/servicedesk/customer/portal/10) in the designated Erasmus request section. Without your student number, you cannot register yourself in TISS!

As long as you do not have your student number:

  • You cannot register in TISS on your own.
  • Our team must register you manually and temporarily reserve spots for you.

·         Because of this, course availability cannot be guaranteed. You may only receive remaining spots (“Restplätze”) if preferred courses are already full.

For courses not included in the application pool, please contact the lecturer directly to request registration.

How can I still register for Design Studios (“Entwerfen”) and Projects?

Since you cannot enrol in TISS yet, you need to write a Jira request with following information:

  • Your top 4 Design Studio preferences, and
  • Any additional preferences (modules, elective seminars)
  • Including course number + course title

Send this information to the Jira Serviceportal.

You will be placed on a list and registered depending on how quickly you receive your student number.

If you still do not have your student number by the start of the semester (1 March / 1 October):

  • Attend the Kick-Offs of the studios you are interested in.
  • Contact the lecturers after the official registration period (end of February / end of September) for free spots (“Restplätze”).
  • During the first week of the semester, Jira can still support you.
  • Afterwards, registration is at the lecturer’s discretion, and many courses may already be fully booked.

Important: Without a student number, you cannot be officially registered. Please make it your priority to obtain it as soon as possible.

After You Receive Your Student Number

Once Jira has registered you:

  • Log into TISS
  • Add all your registered courses to your “Favorites” This ensures you can fully view and track your registrations. Courses you are registered to show a green check next to the title in your favorites (please include the upcoming semester in the dropdown menu in the right corner above your registered courses to see the green check).

Besides a growing number of bachelor’s and master’s courses in Architecture and Spatial Planning that are taught in English, as well as the Building Science and Technology master’s programme, which will be entirely in English, the Faculty for Architecture and Spatial Planning courses require a good knowledge of German.

(Note: only certain courses of the Building Science study course are open to exchange students. A list can be obtained in the International Office on request).

Course Catalogue / Registration

All lectures offered in term time are listed in the lecture-information system TISS (menu item Education). Here you will find all the individual course information on the supervisor, ECTS points, compulsory and optional subjects, including application and examination times.
