Commissional retake of exams and exercises

20. February 2017

How is the law?

Corresponding to § 77 UG2002 and „ TU-Senatsbeschluss „ counts:

Students are entitled to repeat negative exams four times in total (5 accessions). The third and fourth retake are to be held commissional in any way if the exam is hold in a single examination procedure.

Students that started their architecture studies from winter term 2013/14, following settlement according to the curriculum is effective: The entrance and orientation phase  (StEOP) is positively valid, if a minimum of 18 ECTS points from ist attributive 34 ECTS are successfully completed,  in which the „Orientierungskurs“ and minimum one exercise have to be contained in. Until these 18 ECTS are successfully completed within the StEOP’s attributed courses it is possible to repeat an exam three times, afterwards five times.“

Exceptions:

1) lecture - exercises (VU) like all basic courses „Grundkurse“ of the 1st study year (example: „Grundkurs Architektur und Konstruktion – DG, CAAD“ and all studios (Studio Hochbau, Wohnbau, etc..). Here the fourth accession occurs within the regular examination dates, only the fifth accession is commissional!

2) all lectures of the „Studios“- architecture like for example: 253.254 –„Hochbau Einführung“, 256.100- „Raumgestaltung“, 255.045- „Wohnbau“, etc. as well as 253.039-„Bauphysik und Humanökologie“ and  253.060-„Technischer Ausbau“. Here the fourth accession occurs within the regular examination dates, only the fifth accession is commissional!

Commissional retakes are not obligatory but to be arranged only by request of the student.

What is a commissional exam?

A commissional exam is an oral exam infront of a three-men commission which persist of the study dean as chairman, the course’s conductor as main examiner and a second examiner that is aware of the courses’ contents.

Exception: For the course „Grundkurs Architektur und Darstellung – DG“ there is a 30-minutes, written part and a 15-minutes oral part!

The evaluation occurs through the commission and is to be announced right after the exam.

How, when, where?

The application for a commissional exam has to be done personally at the „Deanery of Architecture and Planning“ E401/1, Karlsplatz 13, 1040 Vienna, stairs 3, 4th floor. The application for regular exams occurs first at the deanery then directly at the departments.

Date and place are organised by „ dem/der Studienassistent/in“. The invitation to the commissional exam occurs written via E-Mail. Between the sending of the invitation and the date there must be provided, by law, a study period of minimum 14 days. If it cannot be provided, a new date hast to be organised.

If the student is not able to attend her/his commisional exam, she/he has to inform the deanery in writing in time!

What happens if you fail five times?

After the fifth negative result of a mandatory exam, one is excluded from that studies at the university forever. But it is possible to charge one’s positive exams for other studies.

Why are there no exceptions made?

Internationally there is almost no other university-system that has more possibilities of retakes for exams as in Austia. One who doesn’t succeed to pass successfully in mandatory exams is propably studying the wrong studies. University’s professors and lecturers have a duty of quality adverse their graduates.

No responsibility is taken for the correctness of this information. Deanery of Architecture and Planning, September 2013.
