Mission Statement

29. November 2010

The Faculty of Architecture and Regional Planning at Vienna UT is one of the most renowned institutions of study, research, and education in Central Europe. Its social dimensions are architecture, urban and regional planning. Research into the interrelationships between architecture, regional development, and society is an integral part of advanced design and planning practice.

We are the internationally oriented school of architecture and planning in Austria. We guarantee education that is tailored to the demands of professional practice and research that meets the highest standards of academic scholarship. We teach this discipline in reference to cultural and ethical perspectives.

Objectives and principles

Our teaching, research, and related services are guided by internationally recognised standards. Our core objectives include research and knowledge transfer on potential applications for new technologies, materials, and methods. We are commited to a research culture that gives priority to qualitative over quantitative criteria.

We see architecture and regional planning as a shaping force in the development of society, and base our research and teaching on the postulate of social, ecological, and economic sustainability.

As a nationally funded and internationally oriented institution of higher education, we are aware of our social, economic, and cultural responsibility towards the state, business and other stakeholders with respect to the principle of our university’s independence.

We achieve our objective of research-driven, profession-centered education. Our students are prepared for positions of responsibility in industry, society, and university teaching.

Who we are

With approximately 4000 students and 150 teaching faculty members, our faculty ranks among the largest schools at the Vienna University of Technology and in Austria.

We distinguish ourselves in Austria through the unique combination of architecture and regional planning in one common faculty.

Aim and strategy

The multinationally appointed faculty members, as well as increasing numbers of visiting professors and exchange students ensure that teaching, research, and project work is characterised by international and interdisciplinary approaches. Our declared goal is to achieve internationally acknowledged standards of architectural and infrastructural leadership in the design and planning of the built environment. We are commited to mutual respect in interdisciplinary collaboration as the basis for a culture of knowledge development.

We seek to engage in public discourse on contemporary architecture and planning by contributing knowledge relevant to professional practice.

Technological, socio-cultural, economic, and ecological issues of the built environment are addressed competently in the service of the Interdisciplinary scientific community and society at large.

The focus of our faculty’s activities is on the sustainable development of our present and future (built) environment in Austria from both a creative-architectural and strategic-planning perspective.

We are commited to an academic culture of dialogue between all stakeholders within and beyond the university.

Our actions are aimed at the pursuit of optimal educational quality, innovation, and creativity in research and design as the leading Austrian institution for the architecture and planning disciplines.
