The goal is to establish a contact point where construction-related materials can be viewed via a sample and product specifications, both technical and ecological, can be requested.  Our intention is to provide students with the opportunity of directly accessing materials, experiencing their characteristics such as density, surface texture and scent, all essential for research-based teachings.  As a result, our intention is to establish a library of selected materials, classified according to their formal and ecological properties, and accessible to faculty and students alike.  In addition to the sensory properties, information as to material nomenclature, brand names, processing possibilities and ecological characteristics may be queried.

The urban planning library is located within the office groups of the institute and managed by the librarian Helga Tschiedl (university library of VUT). The overall holdings currently encompass approximately 35,000 volumes, whereby new publications are presented in the urban planning library room (Karlsplatz 13, 4th floor), together with the most important subject groups and up-to-date semester, exercise, examination, and lecture instruments. Here you will also find copies of about 70 running journals for the current publication years, as well as a selection of master and doctoral theses completed at the Department of Urban Design.

In order to support the Department for Spatial and Sustainable Design emphasis on sustainable building and design, we are constantly expanding our library. There are currently over 200 book titles available on the subject of sustainable building and design. The collection of books is intended as a continuation of our own education as well as a source available to students. The collection can be viewed in the library of the Department for Spatial and Sustainable Design. All titles are listed in the online catalog of the University Library of the TU Vienna and in the media database mediabase of the College of Architecture and Planning.

Student unions

 
 

The architecture student union represents the student body enrolled in one of the architecture programmes. The student union is a "grass-roots" organisation: everyone who wants to actively participate is welcome to join in process of discussion, decision, and collaboration. Five student representatives are elected by the student union committee every second year.

The planning student union is the communication centre for students of regional planning and development.

Weekly student union evening: news, difficulties, and the like are discussed.
The student union setup as service centre: orientation for new students, enrollment guidance, information events, activities (café, sports, parties, trips, planner get-togethers, ...), professional journals and weekly periodocals, library and collection of exam study materials.

This printer enables 3D data to be transformed into physical models (monochrome or coloured) in a matter of a few hours, thus allowing comparatively rapid design assessment from early schematic to final presentation modelling.

Working dimensions: w=381mm, d=254mm h=203mm

Computer-controlled milling machine for cutting and engraving sheets up to 12mm thick, such as plexiglass, polystyrene, MDF, and air-ply for model building, as well as for the machining of three-dimensional forms in light block materials.

Milling of volumetric models or model parts free of undercuts, up to a maximum height of 60mm (depending on geoemtry and mill length). Milling of negatives for deep-drawing of thermoplastic sheets.

Working dimensions: w=1000mm, d=600mm h=60mm, File formats: dxf, stl, iges. The drawing files must be scaled 1:1 in mm.

A CNC-controlled milling robot is available in the model-building workshop. In contrast to standard portal milling machines with 3 or 5 control axes, the robot can handle the programming of up to 7-axial milling procedures and offers a workspace of relatively large dimensions. The technological potentials allow the digital manufacturing of experimental objects with very complex geometries, including undercuts. Students can work with this machine in conjunction with specific courses. It is equipped to mill light (e.g., plastic and wood-based) materials.

Especially well suited for milling delicate and precise components. Dark discoloration of angled cutting edges in wood and cardboard (model aesthetics).

Working dimensions: w=1660mm, d=930mm h=200mm. File formats: dwg, dxf, 3dm, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw. The drawing files must be scaled 1:1 in mm.

The department of 3D Design and Model Building of the Institute of Art and Design is actively engaged in the development of technologies for digitising three-dimensional objects, such as concept models, form studies, form-finding experiments, etc. For such purposes, a 3D measuring Microscribe arm by Immersion and a simple, low-cost laser scanner solution is available. The measuring arm allows the spatial position individual points, as well as lines and object contours to be precisely recorded.

The model building workshop is available to all enrolled students for the purpose of crafting three-dimensional presentation objects needed to communicate design proposals developed in design studio courses or thesis projects.

The Space Laboratory is a facility supporting research and teaching activities.  The experimental space provides the opportunity for realizing architectural concepts, as well as testing the effects of space on people.  The Laboratory accommodates light and space simulations along with experiments using, for example, mock-ups or prototypes at a scale of 1:1.  From the help of sponsors, the facility is equipped with the basics including lights; however, future equipment additions are being planned.

As an important part of the Institute of Art and Design, the professionally equipped photo studio is specialized in model photography. Architectural models and design objects that are generated in conjunction with coursework are documented here by or with the professional help of photographers.

High-end equipment is available for small, medium, and large format photography. Analogue photography resources cover supplies for working with slides and negatives, in colour as well as black-and-white. A digital small format system also includes a range of lenses. The available accessories include a shooting table (for prints and transparencies), studio backgrounds, tripods, floodlights, and a flash lighting system.

The institute also has a photo lab, which is specialised in developing black-and-white material in small and medium formats.
